PhD Program in Earth Sciences
The PhD in Earth Sciences has been established since 1991. It is structured in three curricula:

1) Geology and Paleontology
2) Applied Earth Sciences
3) Chemistry and Physics of the Earth System.

The training programme (180 CFU) is oriented according to the curricula (see Research Projects). It is supported by research laboratories of the Department of Earth and Environment Sciences and of CNR-IGG and by several collaborations with Italian and foreign institutions. Recently it also enabled PhD Executive positions sponsored by private entities and achieved the first objective of international agreements of co-supervision with foreign Universities.

PhD candidates are trained to carry out activities devoted to the characterization of geological materials, prevention and mitigation of natural hazards, search and recovery of natural resources, environmental protection and monumental heritage. They follow a training that includes: courses, conferences and seminars, experimental research, internships at research institutions in Italy and abroad. For the completion of the PhD the writing of the final dissertation thesis and/or scientific publications is required.

The main research topics, for the three curricula are the following:
1) Geology and Paleontology: basin analysis and thermal history of sediments; structural geology and sand box modelling of tectonic systems; micropaleontology for paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate purposes
2) Applied Earth Sciences: landforms and geomorphic processes analysis, remote sensing and GIS, geological hazard and risk, applied hydrogeology, applied geophysics
3) Chemistry and Physics of the Earth System: petrology and geochemistry of igneous, metamorphic and mantle rocks; geochronology; fluid-rock interactions; crystallography and crystal-chemistry, mineralogy at high P and T; applied mineralogy and petrography to Cultural Heritage.

The doctoral program provides 3 courses held by teachers of the three curricula. In summary it is expected that within three years, the students follow two of the above mentioned courses, one (also abroad) more focused to his own research, a cycle of conferences organized by the graduate school and seminars series held by PhD candidates enrolled in the last two years.

The main job opportunities are the following:
Universities, national and international research laboratories, public and territorial bodies, national and international agencies for environment, laboratories for analysis and certification of materials, private enterprises operating in the mining and oil exploration, civil engineering, monitoring and environmental recovery, computer companies, professional activity.
